Now more than ever, flights are packed... and often over-booked. With less flights and more and more people traveling, it's bound to happen. I never understood it, but airlines often sell more tickets than they have seats. When everyone shows up for the flight, they have to find a way to take care of everyone. That's when they start asking for volunteers to get bumped to the next flight. I have done it once, years ago. The airline put me up in a hotel for the night, and gave me enough in flight credits to take my next 3 trips for free. So for me it was worth it. Now they seem to bump people, but they are trying to give you as little as possible in return. Before this happens to you, especially with heavy travel during this time of year...
