Palm Beach County Leaders Not Ready To Request Phase 2

With most of Florida now in Phase Two of reopening, Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner says he'll be sending a proposal to Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday, requesting to be allowed to take small steps to move forward.

Kerner says the county isn't yet ready to join 64 other counties in allowing bars to reopen. Miami-Dade and Broward are the other two not joining Phase Two yet.

The mayor says he would be willing to allow some restaurants to expand their bar operations and give businesses like movie theaters and bowling alleys an opportunity to submit reopening plans.

Kerner says he made the decision in consultation with a committee of top officials, which included Dr. Alina Alonso, the Director of the Florida Department of Health, Palm Beach County.

There are no plans to meet as a county commission at this time to vote on requesting that the county join in on Phase Two.

As part of the state's second phase, the counties involved can allow bars and pubs to reopen at 50 percent capacity, while gyms and retail outlets can now bring customers in at full capacity.
